hillary clinton's campaign continues to be clouded by her e-mail controversy. thousands of pages of e-mails from her time as secretary of state are released, some of which are now considered classified. more drought. more floods. rising sea levels. >> with arctic alaska as a backdrop, president obama makes a forceful push to combat climate change. >> we are not acting fast enough. and the deflategate decision is in the hands of a judge. a federal judge will decide whether the new england patriots quarterback will miss the first four games of the season. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, september 1st, 2015. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green.

last night, the state department released more than 7,000 pages of e-mails sent or received by hillary clinton when she was secretary of state. about 150 have been censored because they contain now classified material. it's the latest chapter in the investigation into clinton's controversial private e-mail system, a controversy that is taking a toll on her presidential campaign. brook braga is here in new york with more. >> reporter: good morning. from those 7,000 pages of e-mails, we have learned chelsea clinton played an important role in assessing the response of the haiti earthquake and how the former secretary takes her tea. the biggest controversy is what we couldn't read. the most notable e-mails from the latest batch of hillary clinton's private server are ones the state department couldn't fully released. as many 150 censored ahead of their release on monday because they contained classified information. the former secretary of state has maintained that the messages

were not seen as sensitive at the time. even if they are now. >> it doesn't change the fact that i did not send or receive material marked classified. >> reporter: the e-mails show clinton working on serious issues like haiti disaster relief, but also dealing with requests from friends, unsolicited advice, and trouble with technology. in one e-mail, she asks an assistant to pick up skim milk and find out when the "good wife" airs. so many of the e-mails needed censoring is reence priebus says she cannot be trusted with the white house. e-mail questions with likely to persist as the state department screens and releases more messages each month. the state deped says the information they deleted from these e-mails weren't top secret but confidential, that is the lowest level of classification. a state department official confirmed none of them were marked classified at the time,

but there are still thousands of e-mails to be sorted through. >> thanks a lot, brook. phoenix residents hope today's sunny hot weather will help them dry out from last night's monsoon. the heavy rain and powerful winds triggered flash floods that stranded drivers. >> the roads are totally backed up. i tried opening my car door and the water was coming in my car! so, yes, it's crazy out there. >> wind gusts of near 70 miles per hour were reported and buildings damaged and trees and power lines were knocked down. the phoenix airport was shut down for more than an hour. the recommend man, of tropical storm erika continue to soak central florida. more rain falling through the overnight hours. roads were flooded and several thousand people lost power and more wet weather is expected today. and a historic pack of three powerful hurricanes is swirling in the eastern and central pacific. it is the first time three such

powerful storms have been recorded there at the same time. yesterday, hawaii dodged a hit from hurricane ignacio which had weakened just a bit. the man accused of shooting and killing a houston area sheriff execution-style has a history of mental illness. shannon miles appeared in court yesterday. authorities say he ambushed and shot deputy darren goforth 15 times friday night. the d.a. says they have a witness. >> he heard gunshots and looked up and saw a black male with a bald head shooting, standing over deputy goforth and unloading a pistol into him. >> miles was captured at his mother's house. his attorney says he intends to plead not guilty. miles is due back in court october 5th. a video appears to show a texas man with his hands in the air being fatally shot by sheriff's deputies. the deputies were respond to do a domestic disturbance in san

antonio friday. police say the suspect gilford flores was armed and resisted arrest. a department statement says the deputies tried nonlethal weapons before they shot flores. the bexars police department calls it a cause for concern and asking for calm and patience, the statement says. we are diligently working to complete the investigation so we can move to the next step. this morning, the kentucky county clerk who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses has a decision to make. yesterday, the united states supreme court ruled against kim davis who says same-sex marriage goes against her christian conviction. if she doesn't start issuing licenses she could be hit with fines or jail time. this is the second day of president obama's visit to alaska. he travels to hike on a glacier and take a boat tour of the bay. yesterday, he warned in no uncertain terms about the

consequences of not addressing climate change. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: president obama posted this photo of north america's highest peak on instagram. he used alaska's spectacular scenery as his backdrop to urge swift action on melting glaciers and rising sea levels and coastal erosions and shrinking fish harvest. >> on this issue, of all issues, there is such a thing as being too late. that moment is almost upon us. >> reporter: but his announcement sunday to revert mt. mckinley's name back to denaturalde denali also september people talking. alaskans have always referred to north america's highest mountain as denali which translates to the great one in the native language. congress named it to honor president william mckinley of ohio in 1917. officials in mckinley's home

state say changing the name now is inappropriate. >> because you just don't go and do something like that. >> reporter: the white house says it will work with ohio to find another way to honor the nation's 25th president. danielle nottingham, cbs news, los angeles. the white house is rolling back reports that the president will be coming to new york to work at columbia university after he leaves office. mr. obama graduated from columbia in 1983. the talk started when columbia's president mentioned he looked forward to welcoming back the world's famous alumist. in a statement the president stayed he has long respect for columbia university and his desire to continue working with them, however, at this point, no decisions have been finalized about his post-presidency plans. the penalty phase of the trial starts today for the white supremacist convicted of killing three people at jewish sites in

suburban kansas city last year. the jury found phrasefrazier glynn miller guilty. friends are saying good-byes to two tv journalists killed last week. hundreds attended the memorial service monday in martinsville for alison parker, the reporter shot and killed live on tv. she they shared their memories of the 24-year-old including her love of dance and theater. more than a thousand people honored parker's cameraman adam ward on sunday. a funeral for ward will be held today in roanoke. coming up on the in the morning news, cell phone captures a black driver being pulled over by a cop for making direct eye contact. and, later, a decision could come today on whether tom brady will suit up for the start of the new nfl season.

signaling properly. felton and the officer have agreed to sit down for a conversation about the incident. the dayton police department issued a statement saying, quote, making direct eye contact with an officer is not a basis for a traffic stop. police in baltimore are cancelling leave for all officers during court hearings that start tomorrow for six officers accused in the death of freddie gray. the 25-year-old's death was caused by injuries while in police custody in april and that triggered protests and violence that injured more than a hundred police officers. the police commissioner wants all hands on deck. >> our intelligence is not predicting unrest. we do know that there will, undoubtedly, be some -- some level of protests or presence by a lot of folks. >> the mayor says that baltimore is prepared. and police in phoenix, arizona, are looking for someone who is shooting at vehicles on interstate 10.

fresher harder and yeah, even on sundays. if that's not what you think of when you think of the united states postal service, watch us deliver. a new government report says the smoking rates for u.s. adults keep falling. the cdc released the findings today. the smoking rate was about 15% for the first three months of this year. but that survey data tends to be skewed by the temporary impact of new year's resolutions. last year, the smoking rate dropped to 17%, down from 18% in 2013. cigarette smoke may be down.

but new research finds that regular marijuana use is actually on the rise among college students. the study by the university of michigan found that just under 6% said that they had used marijuana daily or at least 20 times in the previous 30 days. that compares to only 3.5% who use pot daily in 2007. on the cbs "moneywatch" jitters over september swoon and samsung takes on a smartwatch. hena daniels has more. >> reporter: stock markets in asia sank again today. nikkei fell 3% and shanghai composite lost 1%. here on wall street down day to finish the month. august finishing the worst month in more than three years. the s&p 500 was down 17 points

and the nasdaq finished 15 points lower. infidelity website ashley madison is growing. the company that runs the site says hundreds of thousands of users signed up last week. in august, hackers released ashley madison customer data, company e-mails, and other documents. yahoo! ceo melissa meyer is president. she announced on social media she is expecting twin girls in september. she plans to work throughout. she was pregnant when she was hired at yahoo!'s chief three years ago. the news comes as yahoo! is splaning ing planning to spin off its holding in alibaba. samsung says it will release a new smartphone this thursday. the new watch is called the gear s-2 and it's equipped with 3g connectivity and samsung says the battery life is 2 to 3 daze.

a federal judge will make one of the most important calls of the upcoming nfl season. judge richard berman says he will make a final decision by tomorrow on whether to uphold tom brady's suspension. the nfl wants the new england patriots quarterback banned for four games for his role in the deflategate scandal. berman urged both sides to come to a settlement, but no deal was reached. and monday's court proceedings were a shot at redemption for sketch artist jane rosenburg. her botched drawing of brady a few weeks back took the internet by storm. now she says monday's drawing wasn't so great either because her view of brady was blocked. i think it was much better, though. serena williams is one step closer to history this morning. the spotlight is on williams at this year's u.s. open. if she wins this tournament she will be the first woman to win

wildlife experts in connecticut are hunting down a black bear that came a little too close to a hiker. she was recording two bears on friday on her phone when one of them touched her leg with its mouth. the bear has a history of aggressive behavior. a petition is going around to save it from being euthanized. so far, it has more than 12,000 signatures. they called it a new spin on catfishing. two men. >> we are out here on the river. you know? you're not going to believe what is swimming towards our boat. a kitten. >> yeah, two men on a fishing boat made an unusual haul saturday on alabama's black warrior river. two kittens, apparently twins, swam up to their boat. one of the men guessed the kittens were abandoned in the area. the fishermen gave the cats to a

family with two children. thankfully, the kittens weren't the ones that got away. to a cat at the center of a mid flight scare. an international model is being held by federal authorities after allegedly causing a disturbance on a flight from las vegas to frankfurt on friday. rick sallinger of kcnc reports. >> reporter: she is 34-year-old kuova an international model from the czech republic and one of 250 on board this condor flight from las vegas to frankfurt, germany, on friday, when she demanded access to her so-called comfort cat she had taken on board. >> i heard she got a cat with her on the plane and, like, the plane crew didn't know that she was going to take the cat on the plane. >> reporter: the plane was diverted to denver with a fighter escort after a flight attendant was reportedly struck by the screaming woman.
